Being all Keynesian and all, what's your reaction to the notion of a steady-state economy? Within a couple hundred years or so, max, there's kind of no getting around that we'll have to have such a thing. It's looking a bit ahead, but still... no time like the present!jtehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17318378188704219078noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5154389358831836369.post-17747928709544285962013-01-15T21:43:37.264-05:002013-01-15T21:43:37.264-05:00Will, did you really ask that? Me this last year I've been on an Ian Rankin binge and not sure why exactly: Escapism? I suspect so. But I have managed to reread Susan Sontag's Regarding the Pain of Others to decontaminate myself from BO's pompous pronouncements as well as finally finishing Carlio Gadda's That Awful Mess on the Via Merulana. This latter inspired by watching the Inspector Montalbano on my BBC sort of link via RU here in South-West ON. Montalbano light but absorbing entertainment but made me feel guilty I'd not finished Gadda's classic. I did enjoy it - the classic. Also just to cause problems I reread Hobsbawn's The Age of Capitalism and read for the first time the lovely new translation of The Qur'an by the very entertaining M.A.S. Abdel Haleem - ah, who the frigg is that : listen to ABC (the real ABC, eh) the audio introduction by the struggling Yiddish speaker and red hair stunner Ramon Koval

http://j.mp/WU5A40geoffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11828081968204864539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5154389358831836369.post-8668675961380772262012-12-29T17:57:25.876-05:002012-12-29T17:57:25.876-05:00A complement to Hofstadter is:

I suppose you could describe each as populist and conservative in different ways, but a classification that lumps them together isn't very useful.5371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5154389358831836369.post-83826883440492310072012-12-28T15:04:12.752-05:002012-12-28T15:04:12.752-05:00I'm surprised you hadn't read that Hofstad...I'm surprised you hadn't read that Hofstadter book before!
